Rosa mollis is a species of wild rose. Common name soft downy rose. It is most closely related to Rosa villosa.: 98 It is native to the Caucasus and parts of Europe: the British Isles, Scandinavia, and the lands around the Baltic. It has been commonly reported in isolated areas throughout the rest of Europe; this fact has prompted the editors of Atlas Florae Europaeae to raise the question whether these may not be cases of misidentification of either Rosa villosa or Rosa sherardii.: 101–2
Harsh downy rose has low resistance to disease and is highly prone to various leaf spot problems. It is also susceptible to a range of insect pests, and when infections are severe most of its leaves may drop. Its care is considered demanding, since it needs regular watering, fertilizing before flowering, and pruning after flowering and in winter. Preventive spraying might be required, or treatment may be necessary if the plant becomes diseased. Harsh downy rose is appropriate for people who can spend some time and effort on plant care, but keeping it healthy and vigorous may demand greater growing experience and additional effort.
How to keep Rosa Mollis.
Light
Harsh downy rose originates in open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest margins, which offer abundant light. It performs best in Full Sun but will also tolerate Partial Sun, adjusting well to a range of sunlight conditions.
Temperature
Harsh downy rose is highly adaptable to a wide range of climate conditions, from sweltering summers to freezing winters. Yet it does have an ideal temperature range for growth. If temperatures become too high, the plant is susceptible to heat and humidity stress, which can cause it to die. In areas where temperatures near the lower edge of its cold tolerance, it is important to provide insulation to protect the plant.
Fertilizer
Timing is essential for fertilizing the Harsh downy rose. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue monthly until early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth periods.
