Rhododendron irroratum (露珠杜鹃) is a rhododendron species native to northern Vietnam and western Guizhou, southwestern Sichuan, and northern and southeastern Yunnan, China, where it grows at altitudes of 1,700–3,500 m (5,600–11,500 ft). It is an erect evergreen shrub or small tree growing to 2–4 m (6.6–13.1 ft) in cultivation, but may be double that size in the wild. The leathery leaves are oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 7–14 by 2–4 cm in size. The flowers are variable in colour, and may be white or yellowish to violet-rose, but always spotted with greenish or purple flecks.
How to keep Rhododendron Irroratum.
Water
To keep your rhododendron irroratum healthy, it's best to use rainwater or melted snow for hydration, as tap water can contain harmful alkaline ions. During periods of vigorous growth, water the plant generously, but reduce the amount in winter. Increase watering frequency in early spring, and water in the morning during summer. Avoid watering at noon in spring and fall, and cut back on watering during rainy periods.
Pruning
To promote the health and appearance of Rhododendron irroratum, it is best to prune the plant in early spring before new growth begins. Start by trimming any dead branches to encourage dense and healthy foliage. Then, remove the oldest branches to rejuvenate the plant. Lightly prune overgrown areas to improve the plant's shape and air circulation. Be sure to use clean, sharp tools to minimize stress on the plant.
