ON THIS PLANT

Rhodanthe manglesii is a herbaceous plant, a native of Western Australia, that was introduced and cultivated in England in 1834 from seeds collected by James Mangles. Common names for this daisy include pink sunray, silver bells, Australian strawflower, timeless rose or Mangles everlasting. The flower head is yellow and surrounded by pink or white florets, this emerges from nodding, silver coloured, papery bracts that form bell-like buds during August to October in its native habitat. The habit is slender and erect, ranging in height from 0.1 to 0.6 metres, and the plant often carpets areas of sandy, clayey or loamy soils.First described by John Lindley in 1834 in the Botanical Register. The description was accompanied by an illustration by Sarah Drake.

A note from PlantMom

Pink sunray has good disease resistance and is generally not prone to illnesses. However, it can be vulnerable to pests and diseases present in its environment. These problems are typically not severe. Regarding care, this plant needs moderate maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to preserve a neat appearance and encourage healthy growth. Fertilizing can also help stimulate flowering. Pink sunray is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive care experience. It may need more attention when cultivated indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Rhodanthe Manglesii.

Light

Pink sunray comes from bright, open habitats and does best in full sun. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers direct sunlight for optimal growth. This plant, which can be annual or biennial, is known for its sun-loving nature.

Temperature

Pink sunray is quite adaptable to temperature, able to endure higher heat and wide temperature fluctuations. In hot weather, attention should be paid to watering and suitable shade should be provided to prevent sunburn. However, pink sunray is relatively sensitive to low temperatures. It can tolerate some cold, but excessively low conditions can cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

Pink sunray does well with regular, weak fertilizer applications to encourage healthy leaf growth. You should feed Pink sunray about once a month during the summer. Nitrogen is important for foliage, and providing nitrogen-rich sources helps Pink sunray thrive.
