ON THIS PLANT

Ptisana salicina, or king fern, is a species of fern native to Norfolk Island, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Large and robust with a distinctive tropical appearance, it has fronds up to 5 metres (16 feet +/-) tall that arise from a starchy base that was a traditional food for the Maori. It has several other common names including para, tawhiti-para, and horseshoe fern.

A note from PlantMom

King fern typically shows good resistance to disease and has relatively few insect pests. Its care is considered difficult, as it needs a moist environment and frequent watering. However, the roots are prone to rotting if overwatered or if the environment is not well ventilated. King fern is suitable for people with some growing experience, since most people can keep it alive for a certain amount of time. Nevertheless, King fern may struggle to thrive and its leaves can dry out and become less healthy over time.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Ptisana Salicina.

Light

King fern is native to habitats such as forest understories or rocky areas that provide natural shade. It prefers Full Shade but can tolerate Partial Sun.

Temperature

King fern is native to areas where temperatures typically range from 68 to 100°F (20 to 38℃). It shows a strong preference for mild to warm climates. Seasonal adjustments may be necessary to recreate those temperatures.

Pruning

King fern requires minimal pruning, which is best done in early spring before new growth appears. To encourage healthy growth and improve airflow, remove only the dead or damaged fronds at the base. It's important not to cut healthy fronds. Additionally, make sure to sterilize your pruning tools to prevent infections, which will enhance the plant's appearance and reduce the risk of disease.
