Prosopis Alba

ON THIS PLANT

Prosopis alba, commonly known as the white carob tree or algarrobo blanco, is a species of flowering tree in the Fabaceae family. Native to South America, it can be found in countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. This tree can grow up to 15 meters (about 49 feet) tall, with a trunk diameter of up to 1 meter (about 3.3 feet). It has a deep root system that enables it to thrive in arid regions with low rainfall and high temperatures. The leaves of Prosopis alba are small and compound, with numerous green-grayish leaflets. The tree produces small, yellowish-white flowers that bloom during springtime. The fruit of this plant, known as an algarrobo bean, has been used for centuries by indigenous people as a food source for both humans and animals due to its high nutritional value. Prosopis alba also possesses medicinal properties. It is used to treat respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. Ecologically, this plant is significant as it provides shade for other vegetation during hot weather conditions. Additionally, it helps enrich the soil by fixing nitrogen, thus promoting better growth for surrounding plants. Overall, Prosopis alba is an important species both ecologically and culturally. Its various uses throughout history make it a valuable resource within South America's ecosystem.

A note from PlantMom

Algarrobo blanco exhibits strong resistance to disease and is generally not prone to illnesses. With respect to care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. Planted outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Algarrobo blancot is suitable for anyone who has an outdoor area, such as a garden or a deck, and does not demand much prior care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Prosopis Alba.

Light

Algarrobo blanco comes from open habitats, like sunlit meadows and forest edges, where light is abundant. It does best in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, showing good adaptability to different light conditions.

Temperature

Algarrobo blanco shows good temperature adaptability, being capable of withstanding higher heat and wider temperature swings. In hot weather, attention should be paid to watering and adequate shading should be provided to avoid sunburn. On the other hand, Algarrobo blanco is fairly intolerant of low temperatures. Although it can endure some cold, very low temperatures can cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

Fertilize your Algarrobo blanco in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Regular feeding boosts its overall health, producing vigorous growth, greater tolerance of harsh conditions, and enhanced resistance to pests and diseases. Follow a consistent fertilization schedule for your Algarrobo blanco to keep the foliage vibrant, richly colored, and lush.
