ON THIS PLANT

Platanthera aquilonis, the northern green orchid or north wind bog orchid, is a species of orchid native to the United States and Canada. It is closely related to Platanthera huronensis and Platanthera dilatata and had long been confused with Platanthera hyperborea until it was described as a separate species in 1999.

A note from PlantMom

The Northern green orchid typically has strong resistance to disease and is affected by relatively few insect pests. Its care is considered difficult because it requires a high-humidity yet well-ventilated environment with minimal harmful pathogens. Overwatering can cause root rot. Anyone can grow a Northern green orchid, but keeping it healthy and getting it to flower again demands more growing experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Platanthera Aquilonis.

Light

Northern green orchid is native to habitats such as forest understories or rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can also tolerate full sun or full shade, showing its adaptable and hardy nature.

Water

The northern green orchid thrives in adequately moist conditions but can tolerate occasional drought. Water the plant once a week during the summer and every 10 days during the fall and winter. To maintain humidity, especially in dry environments, regularly mist the orchid. It's important to use water with a neutral pH, so be sure to neutralize tap or rainwater before using it.

Temperature

The Northern green orchid can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but its range may still be restricted by various combinations of moisture and heat. It does best in warm summer conditions with sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather or prolonged high temperatures can raise the chance of the Northern green orchid dying. In winter, suitable protection from cold can increase the plant’s survival rate.

Fertilizer

A single spring application of fertilizer is generally adequate for the Northern green orchid, although repeated feedings can maximize growth. Apply fertilizer every month to every month and a half. Fertilizing improves the leaves’ appearance and function, helping maintain even color and a healthy texture. It also encourages root development and nutrient uptake, supporting the plant’s long-term health.

Pruning

The northern green orchid flourishes with minimal pruning. It's best to focus on removing dead foliage in early spring. Avoid heavy pruning to prevent stress on the plant. Pruning at the right time helps improve air circulation, reduces the risk of disease, and enhances flowering. Always use sterilized tools to protect the plant against infection and to maintain its health and beauty.
