Pinguicula Agnata

ON THIS PLANT

Pinguicula agnata is a tropical species of carnivorous plant in the family Lentibulariaceae. Its flowers are a blue-violet color.

A note from PlantMom

Butterwort has moderate disease resistance and needs a very humid environment. If ventilation is poor, however, it can be prone to rot. The plant's care is rated difficult because it needs continuous humidification to keep humidity levels high. It is also especially vulnerable to rotting when the air circulation is inadequate and temperatures are high. Butterwort is best suited to growers with more experience who can provide an appropriate growing environment.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Pinguicula Agnata.

Light

Butterwort comes from habitats exposed to plenty of sunlight, such as open bogs and sunlit wetlands. It favors full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Water

Butterwort, a plant native to humid environments, thrives in conditions similar to tropical rainforests. It prefers constant humidity and needs watering twice a week. Although it has moderate tolerance for drought, high humidity is crucial for effectively capturing prey, as the plant uses its sticky leaves for this purpose.

Temperature

Butterwort does best in conditions that resemble its native environment, preferring temperatures of 68 to 95 °F (20 to 35 °C). To keep it healthy, especially in colder months, it should be protected from temperatures falling below 50 °F (10 °C).

Pruning

Butterwort plants have insect-trapping leaves and flowers, and they require minimal pruning. In the spring, remove any dead foliage and trim away spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming. Always use clean tools to prevent the spread of disease. During the active growing season, prune to manage the plant's size and improve air circulation, which helps combat mold.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Butterwort, select a pot 1–2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with good drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball sits slightly below the rim of the flower pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place it in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
