ON THIS PLANT

Parkinsonia praecox, the palo brea or Sonoran palo verde, is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae. It is native to the dry Neotropics from Mexico to Argentina. A small tree reaching 6 to 9 m, it is usually a bit wider than it is tall.

A note from PlantMom

Sonoran palo verde shows good disease resistance and is generally not susceptible to disease. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs minimal watering, and larger plants typically do not need pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Sonoran palo verdet is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or a deck, and does not require extensive plant-care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Parkinsonia Praecox.

Light

Sonoran palo verde comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, that provide abundant light. It does best in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adjusting well to different sunlight conditions.

Water

The Sonoran palo verde is an evergreen plant well-suited for dry conditions, boasting excellent drought tolerance. It only needs watering every 1 to 2 weeks and stays green throughout the year, making it perfect for outdoor landscaping in areas with low rainfall.

Temperature

Sonoran palo verde comes from tropical areas, where the climate is generally warm and humid. As a result, it is adapted to high heat and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature swings and prefers a consistent temperature, so avoiding indoor temperature fluctuations is important. It usually cannot endure cold and needs warmer conditions to grow. If the ambient temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize a Sonoran palo verde is in early spring as it comes out of dormancy. This stimulates overall growth and supports flower development. Fertilization improves the foliage, stems, and branches, and encourages flowers that are large, vibrant, and long-lasting. It assists in moving nutrients from the roots to the flowers and enhances the plant’s health and resistance to disease.

Pruning

The Sonoran palo verde is a small tree known for its green bark and graceful shape. To keep it healthy and attractive, prune it in early spring. Focus on removing dead or crossing branches to maintain an open canopy, which enhances air circulation. Light and regular pruning helps support the tree's health and structure, while avoiding excessive stress.
