Hopia obtusa is a species of grass commonly known as vine mesquite. This plant was treated as Panicum obtusum until recently when more molecular and genetic material revealed new information about it. Hopia obtusa is now placed in the monotypic genus Hopia.
Vine mesquite has strong disease resistance and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of upkeep, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller specimens, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Vine mesquite is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand extensive care experience.
How to keep Panicum Obtusum.
Light
The vine mesquite originates from habitats such as forest undergrowth or rocky terrains that naturally offer a shade. It typically prefers partial sunlight exposure, but it's able to adjust to either complete sunlight or full shade, showcasing its adaptable and resilient characteristics.
Temperature
The vine mesquite is native to tropical areas characterized by high heat and humidity. Consequently, it is well-suited to hot and humid conditions. It doesn't respond well to abrupt fluctuations in temperature, favoring a consistent temperature setting, so it's crucial to prevent abrupt indoor temperature changes. This plant typically doesn't thrive in cold environments and needs warmer temperatures for optimal growth. If the temperature dips too much, the vine mesquite might halt growth or perish.
Fertilizer
Additional nutrients are crucial for vine mesquite to foster healthy fresh growth. During spring, supplying some compost around the plant's base is a practical method to deliver the required nutrients. The process of fertilizing bolsters robust growth and assists the plant in combating diseases and pests.
