ON THIS PLANT

Batochloa is a genus of grasses. It includes a single species, Batochloa deusta, commonly known as broadleaf panicum or rietbuffelgras. It is a tufted or shortly rhizomatous perennial native to Senegal and to eastern and southern Africa from Sudan to South Africa. It grows in forests, deciduous bushland and grassland on argillaceous or arenaceous (sandy) soils.

A note from PlantMom

Forked panicgrass is resistant to disease and generally does not tend to get sick. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Forked panicgrass is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not need extensive plant-care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Panicum Deustum.

Light

Forked panicgrass is a sun-loving, perennial herbaceous species native to open habitats and commonly found in meadows and grasslands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Temperature

Forked panicgrass can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be restricted by different combinations of moisture and heat. It performs best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather or sustained high temperatures can raise the chance of Forked panicgrass dying. In winter, protecting it from cold can increase the plant's chances of survival.

Fertilizer

Forked panicgrass needs extra nutrients to encourage healthy new growth. In spring, placing some compost around the plant's base will effectively supply the nutrition it requires. Fertilizing helps support vigorous growth and improves the plant's ability to resist diseases and pests.

Pruning

Broadleaf panicum is a robust grass characterized by its wide leaves. For optimal growth and size management, prune it in early spring. Be sure to remove any dead stems and older foliage to increase air circulation, lower the risk of disease, and boost its overall vitality. Regular pruning is essential for maintaining the plant's appearance and health.
