When planting smooth catmint, wait until the surface of the soil is dry before watering. For plants in pots, water them when the soil surface becomes dry. During the summer, they may require daily watering. In contrast, during the winter dormancy period, you can skip watering altogether.

To promote branch growth in smooth catmint seedlings, pinch them back once they reach a height of 6 to 8 inches. For mature plants, regular pruning is essential. Trim 20% to 25% of the upper branches after the plants have finished flowering. To control their spread and prevent them from taking over your garden, prune the flowers before they go to seed.
