ON THIS PLANT

Nepenthes tentaculata, or the fringed pitcher-plant, is a tropical pitcher plant with a wide distribution across Borneo and Sulawesi. It grows at altitudes of 400–2,550 m.

A note from PlantMom

Fringed pitcher-plant has moderate resistance to disease and requires very humid conditions. However, if it lacks adequate ventilation it can be prone to rot. The care level for this plant is considered difficult, since it needs continuous humidification to maintain high humidity. Fringed pitcher-plant is also highly prone to rot if the environment is poorly ventilated and becomes too hot. Fringed pitcher-plant is suited to growers with more experience who can provide an appropriate growing environment.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Nepenthes Tentaculata.

Light

The Fringed pitcher-plant comes from habitats with plentiful sunlight, such as open bogs and sunny wetlands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Temperature

Fringed pitcher-plant prefers moderate temperatures, about the same range most people find comfortable. It does best in conditions that are neither overly hot nor overly cold. The primary problem with high temperatures is an increased risk of sunburn, so it’s wise to provide some shade in summer to avoid excessive heat. When temperatures fall, the Fringed pitcher-plant becomes dormant. If you want it to continue growing, you need to keep winter temperatures higher. Frost can damage the plant and should be avoided.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Fringed pitcher-plant, select a pot 1-2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with ample drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, ensuring the root ball is slightly lower than the rim of the flower pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place the plant in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
