ON THIS PLANT

Nemesia floribunda is an erect annual herb that is native to South Africa, but has naturalized elsewhere.

A note from PlantMom

Cape Jewels is fairly resistant to disease and generally not prone to illnesses. Nevertheless, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its environment. Such infections are typically mild. For care, this plant requires moderate maintenance. Regular pruning is necessary to keep a pleasing appearance and support healthy growth. Fertilizing can also help encourage flowering. Cape Jewels is suitable for people with outdoor spaces like a garden or patio and does not demand much gardening experience. It may need extra attention when grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Nemesia Floribunda.

Light

Cape Jewels does best with ample daily light that mirrors the conditions of its native habitat. It can tolerate partial shade, but that may limit optimal growth. Excessive light can cause harm, such as leaf scorching, while too little light can impede the plant's development.

Water

Cape Jewels thrive in well-drained soils and prefer consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged. They are moderately drought-tolerant, but benefit from weekly watering, especially during their active growing season, to promote lush flowering in gardens.

Temperature

Cape Jewels can adjust to a wide range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be restricted by different combinations of water and heat conditions. It does best in warm summers with sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather and prolonged high temperatures both raise the risk of Cape Jewels dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can increase the plant's chances of survival.

Fertilizer

After most of Cape Jewels' blooms have fully opened, resume fertilizing. When flowering reaches its peak, feed the plant every three to four weeks, as weather allows. Then, once Cape Jewels begins producing fewer new flowers, cease fertilizing; there is no need to fertilize when the plant can no longer produce more blooms.

Pruning

Cape Jewels showcases vibrant blooms that make them perfect for gardens. To promote healthy growth and more flowers, prune them in early spring. Remove any dead stems and trim back leggy growth to encourage bushiness. After the first bloom, a light trimming can encourage a second round of flowering. However, be careful not to over-prune, as this can reduce the number of blooms.
