Narcissus pseudonarcissus is also known as Daffodil. It is a bulb-forming plant in the amaryllis family, widely recognized for its classic yellow color and trumpet form. This perennial plant grows to about 16 inches in height. Planting daffodil bulbs in the fall, about 2 to 4 weeks before winter is its common planting season. That is the reason why Daffodils flower in late winter or early spring. They are also native to North America, except in the hottest and wettest areas.
How to keep Narcissus Spp.
Water
Daffodils need lots of water as they are growing. After planting, water the seed immediately and make sure to keep the soil moist until it rains. Provide an inch of water per week while they are putting on foliage and blooming. Bulbs planted under trees should be watered twice a week. Then just continue watering for three weeks after its blooms fade.
Temperature
Places with 60°F to 70°F temperatures are where Daffodils thrive the most. These flowers do not need humidity to affect their growth.
Fertilizer
Low-nitrogen fertilizers with the ratio of 3-6-6 or 5-10-10 can be used for Daffodils as early as they are being planted. Just be sure to not let the fertilizer come in direct contact with the flower’s bulbs.
Pruning
The leaves should not be cut back until after they have turned yellow. These leaves are used by the flowers as energy to create next year’s flowers. Daffodils will still continue to absorb nutrients for about six weeks even after blooming.
Toxicity
Daffodils can also be toxic to pets. To prevent any harm from happening, keep this flower away from their reach. It can also irritate human skin or even aggravate skin allergies if a human gets in contact with its sap.
