Melocactus zehnerii is a Turk's turban cactus native to the state of Bahia, in north eastern Brazil. It is also known as Melocactus giganteus and Cactus zehntneri. Like other Turk's turbans, it has a roundish lower body with typically about eleven vertical ribs which does the photosynthesis and an elongated upper body, the cephalum, which is a type of capitate inflorescence. Its phyllotaxis is much higher; usually 34/55. This upper cephalum can grow as much as 72 cm (28 in) in length, and displaying as many as 16 annual rings. one of the longest living of all inflorescences known. This species was discovered in 1968 by Leopoldo Horst and A.F.H. Buining.
Melocactus zehntneri shows good resistance to disease and tolerates normal care routines without becoming sick easily. It can, however, be vulnerable to mealybugs; these pests may cause some damage but are generally not a serious threat. Regarding care, the plant is drought-tolerant and does not need frequent watering. It can withstand long stretches without water and requires little fertilizer. However, if kept in poor light and overwatered, it is highly prone to root rot. Overall, Melocactus zehntneri is well suited to people who want to spend less time on plant care, though it is important to understand and meet its basic needs. It is particularly suitable for those who are away for long periods and may forget to water their plants regularly.
How to keep Melocactus Zehntneri.
Light
Originating from arid areas, Melocactus zehntneri prospers under full sun, as its native habitat is marked by intense sunlight and little shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, giving it some flexibility in its growth.
Water
Melocactus zehntneri is a drought-tolerant plant that only needs thorough watering when the soil is dry. During the growing seasons from spring to fall, water it once or twice a week. In winter, reduce watering to once a week. It's best to use rainwater or distilled water to prevent soil compaction that can occur with tap water. Be careful not to wet the stem when watering, as this can lead to rot.
Temperature
Melocactus zehntneri does best in warm conditions and needs higher temperatures during the growing season to encourage growth and metabolic activity. It prefers plenty of sunlight, suitable moisture levels, and good airflow. However, it can be damaged by temperatures that are too low and by excessive watering. Likewise, it’s important to avoid overly high temperatures and very dry conditions.
Fertilizer
Melocactus zehntneri only needs light applications of fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season. Do not fertilize in winter or summer when the plant is dormant. Cut back on fertilizer for repotted specimens and wait a few months after repotting before applying any. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and promotes flowering.
Pruning
Melocactus zehntneri is a distinctive cactus known for its spherical shape and unique cephalium. Pruning should be kept to a minimum and should focus on removing only dead or damaged tissue. The best time to prune is in early spring. To ensure the plant's health, use sterilized tools, maintain good air circulation, and be careful not to disturb the cephalium.
Pot & Repot
Repot Melocactus zehntneri in spring or summer, selecting a pot slightly larger than the current one that provides good drainage. Use a sandy or gritty cactus mix that drains well. Handle the plant carefully to avoid its spikes. Let the cactus dry out before repotting to help prevent root rot. After repotting, wait one week before watering so the roots can heal.
