ON THIS PLANT

Melicope ternata, commonly known as wharangi, is a coastal shrub or small tree in the family Rutaceae that is native to New Zealand. Melicope ternata has glossy, green, trifoliate foliage and can grow into a tree 8 metres tall. It is found in coastal areas in the North Island.

A note from PlantMom

Wharangi possesses strong disease resistance and is generally unlikely to be affected by diseases. Regarding upkeep, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors, it needs only minimal watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Wharangit is appropriate for anyone who has an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much prior care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Melicope Ternata.

Light

Wharangi is native to habitats like forest understories and rocky areas, where it exists in natural shade. It favors partial sun but can adapt to full sun or full shade, showing its versatility and hardiness.

Temperature

Wharangi shows strong adaptability to a variety of climate conditions, from scorching summers to cold winters. Nevertheless, it has an optimal temperature range for growth. When temperatures become excessively high, the plant is vulnerable to heat and humidity stress, which can lead to its death. In areas where temperatures near the lower limit of its cold tolerance, it is important to apply insulation to protect the plant.

Fertilizer

Timing is vital when fertilizing Wharangi. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue once a month until early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth periods.

Pruning

To keep your Wharangi thriving, it's best to start with early spring pruning. Begin by removing any dead branches to help maintain the plant's shape and boost growth. Next, thin out the interior branches to improve air circulation. Trimming the tips of the branches encourages fuller foliage, reduces the risk of disease, and ensures both robust growth and an attractive appearance.
