Maurandya Scandens

ON THIS PLANT

The blossoms of the snapdragon vine (Maurandya scandens), while not related to the classic garden snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus), are similar to those of the popular garden annual. The one predictable aspect of this plant's naming convention is that it goes by several different names, including creeping snapdragon, vining snapdragon, and trailing snapdragon. Snapdragon vine, which is native to Mexico and Central America, is making a recovery from near extinction. Its trumpet-shaped flowers (a favorite of hummingbirds) give an old-fashioned beauty to a garden or landscape, and its bright green arrowhead-shaped leaves form a truly fascinating vine.

A note from PlantMom

Mexican twist demonstrates good resistance to disease and typically does not develop illnesses. Nevertheless, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its environment. These problems are usually mild. For care, the plant has moderate requirements. It should be pruned regularly to keep a tidy appearance and support healthy growth. Fertilizing can also help encourage flowering. Mexican twist is well suited for people with outdoor areas, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive gardening experience. It may need more attention when kept indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Maurandya Scandens.

Light

Mexican twist is a perennial herbaceous plant that favors sunny sites and is native to open habitats, often thriving in meadows and grasslands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Water

Although this vine is drought resilient, it will thrive with frequent hydration. Snapdragon vine needs only one inch of water each week to thrive, and it can withstand mild, short droughts rather well.

Temperature

Mexican twist demonstrates good temperature adaptability, tolerating higher heat and wider temperature swings. In hot weather, attention should be paid to watering and suitable shading provided to prevent sunburn. Conversely, Mexican twist is fairly sensitive to low temperatures. While it can handle some cold, overly frigid conditions can cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

Early spring, when the Mexican twist is coming out of dormancy and starting active growth, is the best time to apply fertilizer. Fertilizing supplies essential nutrients needed for healthy development. Although the Mexican twist has fairly low fertilizer requirements, an annual application can help its survival and encourage healthier, longer-lasting flowers.

Pruning

Snapdragon vines don't require much pruning and can be left to grow wild unless space is limited. You can trim your vine to regulate its spread or location if necessary; otherwise, simply remove any leaves or vines that appear unhealthy or dead.
