ON THIS PLANT

Maurandya antirrhiniflora, known as roving sailor or (along with other similar species) climbing snapdragon, is a scrambling or climbing herbaceous perennial native to Mexico and the south western United States (California to Texas) where it grows in a variety of relatively dry habitats. It has more-or-less triangular untoothed leaves and tubular flowers in various shades of pink, red or blue to violet with white bases. Unlike other species in the genus Maurandya, the flowers have closed "lips"; it has sometimes been put into a separate genus as Maurandella antirrhiniflora.

A note from PlantMom

Roving sailor shows strong resistance to disease and is generally not vulnerable to illnesses. Still, it can be affected by pests and diseases that exist in its environment. These problems are typically mild. Regarding care, this plant is moderately demanding. It should be pruned on a regular basis to preserve an attractive look and encourage healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also aid in boosting flowering. Roving sailor is appropriate for anyone who has outdoor space, like a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive plant-care experience. It may need additional attention when cultivated indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Maurandella Antirrhiniflora.

Light

Roving sailor does best in spots that receive plentiful sunlight for most or all of the day. However, locations with only intermittent or partial sun will also support its growth. Too much sun can make the leaves look faded, while too little light can make the plant become leggy.

Temperature

The roving sailor is native to areas where temperatures range from 50 to 100°F (10 to 38°C). It prefers warmer conditions but can tolerate cooler temperatures. Adjust care as needed during extreme seasons to maintain optimum health.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize a Roving sailor is in early spring, as it emerges from dormancy and starts active growth. Fertilization supplies essential nutrients for healthy development. While the Roving sailor has fairly low fertilizer requirements, an annual application can boost its survival and encourage better, longer-lasting flowers.
