ON THIS PLANT

Magnolia coco, the coconut magnolia, is a species of flowering plant in the family Magnoliaceae, native to southern China, Taiwan, and northern Vietnam. A small tree from 7–13 ft (2–4 m) in the garden, it is hardy to zone 9, and can also be kept as a houseplant. It is incorrectly called Magnolia pumila in some sources.

A note from PlantMom

Magnolia coco shows good resistance to disease and is generally unlikely to be affected by illnesses. In terms of care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Magnolia cocot is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or a deck, and does not demand much experience in plant care.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Magnolia Coco.

Light

Magnolia coco naturally occurs in habitats like forest understories or rocky terrain, where it encounters natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, demonstrating its versatile and hardy nature.

Water

Magnolia coco thrives in humid, moist environments and needs to be watered every 1 to 2 weeks to ensure consistent moisture. As a deciduous plant, it sheds its leaves each year to conserve water during dry seasons.

Temperature

Magnolia coco is fairly adaptable to temperature, able to endure higher heat and wide temperature swings. When temperatures rise, attention should be paid to watering and appropriate shading should be provided to prevent sunburn. However, Magnolia coco is less tolerant of low temperatures. While it can resist some cold, excessively low temperatures can cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

When to fertilize Magnolia coco matters. Apply fertilizer in early spring and repeat monthly until early summer. Fertilizer encourages attractive blooms and supplies energy both during dormancy and in periods of active growth.

Pruning

Magnolia coco is an evergreen shrub known for its glossy leaves and fragrant flowers. To maintain its shape, remove damaged branches, and encourage healthy growth, it's best to prune the plant between early and late winter. Using clean tools is crucial during this process to prevent infections and promote proper healing.
