Litsea calicaris, the mangeao, is an evergreen tree endemic to the North Island of New Zealand, occurring in lowland forest from near North Cape south to about 38°S. It belongs to the Laurel family, Lauraceae.
Mangeao shows strong resistance to disease and is typically not vulnerable to illnesses. Regarding upkeep, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller specimens, however, should be trimmed after they finish blooming. Mangeaot is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not call for extensive plant-care experience.
How to keep Litsea Calicaris.
Light
Mangeao comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which offer abundant light. It thrives in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to a range of sunlight conditions.
Temperature
Mangeao shows good temperature adaptability, tolerating higher heat and wide temperature swings. In hot conditions, care should be taken with watering and providing adequate shade to avoid sunburn. On the other hand, Mangeao is relatively sensitive to low temperatures. It can endure some cold, but very low temperatures may cause frost damage.
Fertilizer
Fertilize your Mangeao in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Regular feeding boosts overall health, producing vigorous growth, increased toughness in harsh conditions, and better resistance to diseases and pests. Keep to a defined fertilization routine for your Mangeao to achieve foliage that is vibrant, deeply colored, and lush in appearance.
