ON THIS PLANT

Lithops fulviceps is a species of plant in the family Aizoaceae. It is endemic to Namibia. Its natural habitats are rocky areas and cold desert. It is threatened by habitat loss.

A note from PlantMom

Lithops fulviceps exhibits moderate disease resistance but is relatively sensitive to humidity. High humidity makes it more prone to disease, and it can develop root rot during dormancy. In terms of care, Lithops fulviceps tolerates drought yet requires more water in the growing season. Watering should be sharply reduced or stopped entirely while it is dormant. This species is best suited to growers with some experience, since it can be challenging to care for, particularly during dormancy. It is especially appropriate for those who can dedicate time to its care over the winter months.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Lithops Fulviceps.

Light

Originating from arid areas, Lithops fulviceps does best in full sun, its natural habitat featuring intense sunlight and very little shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, giving it some adaptability in growth.

Water

Lithops fulviceps is a drought-tolerant succulent native to arid regions. It thrives in conditions of low humidity by storing moisture in its thick leaves. This plant typically needs watering only once every three weeks. Being evergreen, it can easily survive even when rainfall is infrequent.

Temperature

Although Lithops fulviceps can tolerate some heat, it grows best during the cooler seasons and becomes dormant in summer. In hot summer conditions, provide shade to avoid scorching from strong sunlight. Watering should be reduced or stopped during the hottest period to prevent root rot. It grows most vigorously in winter and spring, and will continue to grow steadily so long as temperatures do not fall too low.

Fertilizer

For Lithops fulviceps, small amounts of fertilizer once or twice a year during the active growing season are adequate. Do not fertilize in winter or summer when the plant is dormant. Cut back on fertilizing for plants that have been repotted and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying fertilizer. Fertilizer helps maintain healthy growth and promotes flowering.

Pruning

To keep Lithops fulviceps in good shape, pruning is important, especially during the spring and autumn. Use tools like knives and scissors to remove any excess or densely packed branches. For propagation, cut robust stems with 5-6 leaves, apply sulfur powder to the wounds, and make sure the soil is slightly moist for the cuttings.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Lithops fulviceps, choose a pot slightly larger than the current one that provides good drainage. Use a gritty, well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Gently remove the plant from its old pot, brush off excess soil, and plant it at the same depth. Wait several days before watering to let any root damage heal. Repot in spring or autumn and place it in a brightly lit spot.
