Malva trimestris (synonyms Althaea trimestris, Lavatera trimestris), common names annual mallow, rose mallow, royal mallow, regal mallow, and common annual tree mallow is a species of flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region. It is an annual growing to 120 cm (47 in) tall by 45 cm (18 in) wide, producing shallow funnel-shaped flowers in summer, in shades of white and pink, with maroon centres and maroon veining on the petals. The Latin trimestris literally means "of three months", referring to the growing and flowering period. This plant is widely cultivated, often under the name Lavatera trimestris. Numerous cultivars have been developed for garden use, all of which are annuals to be sown in spring for flowering the same year. The cultivars 'Beauty Series' and 'Silver Cup' have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Annual mallow has strong resistance to diseases and is generally not susceptible to them. Still, it can be affected by pests and illnesses present in its environment, though such problems are usually mild. Carewise, the plant requires a moderate amount of maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to preserve a neat appearance and healthy growth, and fertilizing can help encourage blooms. Annual mallow is well suited to anyone with outdoor space, like a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive gardening experience. It may need more attention if cultivated indoors.
How to keep Lavatera Trimestris.
Light
Annual mallow is a sun-loving plant that needs ample sunlight to achieve optimal growth and health. In its natural habitat it does best with unobstructed sunlight. When light is limited, the plant can develop weak growth and pale foliage. Excessive shading should be avoided.
Humidity
This plant will thrive in moderate humidity, which is probably the level in your home. However, misting it a few times a week can be very beneficial. Make sure the room has good ventilation.
Temperature
Annual mallow is native to areas with moderate temperatures. It performs best in a temperature range of 68 to 95 °F (20 to 35 ℃). During extreme seasonal fluctuations, it may be necessary to modify its surrounding temperature.
Fertilizer
When most of Annual mallow's blooms have opened to full size, resume fertilizing. During the period of peak flowering, apply fertilizer every three to four weeks, depending on weather. Once Annual mallow begins producing fewer new blooms, stop fertilizing; there is no need to feed the plant when it can no longer produce additional flowers.
