Kniphofia northiae, the giant red-hot poker, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asphodelaceae, native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Growing to 1.7 m (5.6 ft) tall, it is a robust evergreen perennial with handsome curved leaves resembling an aloe. In spring and summer the stout central stem bears oval flowerheads consisting of many tubular florets packed closely together. Green in bud, the flowers open to a muted red and fade from the base to yellow and brown, thus giving the appearance of a red-hot poker. K. northiae is found above 300 m (980 ft) in the mountain grassland of the Drakensberg from the Eastern Cape to KwaZulu-Natal. This species is named after the English botanical artist Marianne North. K. northiae is valued in horticulture for its architectural qualities. It is hardy down to −10 °C (14 °F). Slightly larger and more tender than its cousin K. rooperi it favours milder locations such as the south west coast of England. It requires a situation in full sun, which is reliably moist but well-drained. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Broadleaf Poker has strong disease resistance and is generally not prone to illness. It can, however, be affected by pests and diseases present in its environment; these infestations are usually minor. For care, the plant requires a moderate amount of maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to maintain an attractive appearance and healthy growth. Fertilizing can also encourage better flowering. Broadleaf Poker is well suited to anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not require extensive care experience. It may demand more attention when grown indoors.
How to keep Kniphofia Northiae.
Light
Broadleaf Poker is a sun-loving perennial herbaceous plant native to open habitats, frequently flourishing in meadows and grasslands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.
Water
Kniphofia northiae originates from subtropical regions and thrives in consistently moist environments. To maintain its lush growth, it requires weekly watering, and during its active growing season, more frequent watering is needed for optimal flowering. Although the plant can tolerate short dry spells, it performs best with regular hydration.
Temperature
Broadleaf Poker can tolerate a broad range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be constrained by particular combinations of moisture and heat. It does best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or watering. Long stretches of cloudy, rainy weather or extended high temperatures increase the chance of Broadleaf Poker dying. In winter, protecting it from the cold can raise its survival rate.
Fertilizer
Generally, one fertilizer application in spring is enough for Broadleaf Poker, though additional feedings can maximize growth. Apply fertilizer every one to one-and-a-half months. Fertilization improves leaf appearance and function, encouraging even color and a healthy texture. It also promotes root development and nutrient uptake, supporting long-term plant health.
Pruning
Kniphofia northiae boasts striking, torch-like flowers and dense foliage. To enhance its appearance and health, prune the plant in early spring. Remove any spent flower stalks and damaged leaves to encourage new growth and prevent disease.
Pot & Repot
Kniphofia northiae grows best in pots that have excellent drainage to prevent waterlogging. Proper drainage is essential for the plant's health and growth.
