ON THIS PLANT

Jasminum multiflorum, commonly known as star jasmine, is a species of jasmine in the family Oleaceae. In Indian mythology, Kund is known for its whiteness. So, instead of the common western phrase 'white as snow', what often appears in Hindu mythological stories is 'white as kunda'. Also, beautiful white teeth are often compared to Kunda buds. It is held to be especially sacred to Vishnu. In Manipur, Kundo flowers are used in worship, and are an essential part of a marriage ceremony. The bride garlands the groom with two Kundo flower garlands. The groom then takes one of the two and garlands the bride.

A note from PlantMom

Star jasmine is highly resistant to disease and rarely develops problems from pests or infections. As for upkeep, this species is fairly easy to care for. When grown outdoors it needs only infrequent watering, and mature plants usually don't require pruning. Smaller plants, on the other hand, should be trimmed after they finish flowering. Star jasmine is a good choice for anyone with an outdoor area like a garden or a deck and does not demand extensive gardening experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Jasminum Multiflorum.

Light

Star jasmine is native to open habitats like sunny meadows and forest edges, which provide abundant light. It performs best in Full Sun but will also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to a range of sunlight conditions.

Water

Star jasmine thrives in tropical environments where it receives moderate moisture. When grown indoors, it needs watering every 1-2 weeks. Being an evergreen, star jasmine also benefits from higher humidity, which supports its vibrant growth throughout the year.

Temperature

Star jasmine is quite adaptable to temperature, tolerating heat and considerable temperature fluctuations. In hot weather, it’s important to watch watering and provide adequate shade to prevent sunburn. However, star jasmine has limited cold tolerance; while it can handle some chill, extremely low temperatures may cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

Proper timing is essential for fertilizing Star jasmine. Apply fertilizer in early spring and repeat monthly through early summer. Fertilizer encourages lovely blooms and provides energy during both dormant periods and active growth.

Pruning

Star jasmine is an evergreen shrub admired for its fragrant white flowers. To maintain its beauty and encourage growth, prune the plant in early spring. This helps shape the shrub, remove dead wood, and stimulate new growth. Make sure to use clean tools for neat cuts. Focus on trimming overgrown branches to improve air circulation and boost flowering. Regular pruning not only enhances the plant's health but also prevents it from becoming unruly.
