A NOTE OF INTEREST

Impatiens capensis, the orange jewelweed, common jewelweed, spotted jewelweed, jewelweed, spotted touch-me-not, or orange balsam, is an annual plant which is native to North America. It is common in bottomland soils, ditches, and along creeks, often growing side by side with its less common relative, yellow jewelweed (I. pallida).

THE NAME

The Spotted Touch-Me-Not plant is known for its fascinating seedpods, which burst open with just a gentle touch once they mature. This unique feature gives the plant its name, "touch-me-not." The flowers of this plant are adorned with dark orange to red spots, which is why it is also called spotted touch-me-not.
