ON THIS PLANT

The Santa Cruz cypress (Hesperocyparis abramsiana; formerly classified as Cupressus abramsiana) is a species of North American tree within the Cypress family. The species is endemic to the Santa Cruz Mountains within the Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties of west-central California. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the species on the Endangered Species Act in 1987 due to increasing threats from habitat loss and disruption of natural forest fire regimes. In 2016, the conservation status of the Santa Cruz cypress changed to Threatened. The cited reasoning was a decrease in threats against their habitat.

A note from PlantMom

Santa cruz cypress is resistant to disease and generally not susceptible to illnesses. With regard to care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Santa cruz cypress is well suited for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand a lot of gardening experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Hesperocyparis Abramsiana.

Light

Santa cruz cypress comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which provide abundant light. It performs best in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adjusting well to different sunlight conditions.

Temperature

Santa cruz cypress is highly adaptable to a wide range of climates, from scorching summers to chilly winters. Still, there is an optimal temperature range for its growth. If temperatures get too high, the plant is vulnerable to heat and humidity stress, which can cause it to die. In areas where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, providing insulation to protect the plant is important.

Fertilizer

Santa cruz cypress has specific nutrient needs and does not require heavy fertilization. Fertilizing in spring is best for promoting optimal growth. Supplying nutrients enhances its health, increases its resistance to pests and diseases, and helps sustain its long lifespan.
