ON THIS PLANT

Helianthemum almeriense, also known as jarilla, mata turmera or tormera in Spanish, is a very branched woody plant of the Cistaceae family, with showy white flowers, which blooms in winter and spring.

A note from PlantMom

Jarilla displays strong disease resistance and is usually not susceptible to illnesses. As for care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have bloomed. Jarillat is appropriate for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand extensive care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Helianthemum Almeriense.

Light

Jarilla comes from open habitats like sunny meadows and forest edges that offer abundant light. It grows best in Full Sun but can withstand Partial Sun, showing good adaptability to different light levels.

Temperature

Jarilla is highly adaptable to a wide range of climate conditions, from blistering summers to cold winters. Still, it requires a particular temperature range for optimal growth. If temperatures become too high, the plant can suffer from heat and humidity stress, which may lead to its death. In areas where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, applying insulation measures to protect the plant is important.

Fertilizer

Timing is essential for fertilizing Jarilla. Start feeding in early spring and continue once a month up to early summer. Fertilizer promotes lovely blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth phases.

Pruning

Prune Helianthemum almeriense in early spring to encourage growth and blooming. Remove any dead stems and trim long branches to maintain a compact shape. Make cuts just above healthy leaf buds and avoid heavy pruning. Use clean tools to ensure clean cuts, and promote good airflow around the plant to reduce the risk of disease.
