Guadua angustifolia also known as the Colombian timber bamboo and Colombian giant thorny, is a species of clumping bamboo found from Central to South America.
Colombian thorny bamboo has strong resistance to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of care, this species is fairly low-maintenance. Planted outdoors, it needs only light watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Colombian thorny bamboo is well suited to anyone with outdoor space—like a garden or a deck—and does not demand extensive plant-care experience.
How to keep Guadua Angustifolia.
Light
Colombian thorny bamboo comes from open habitats, such as sunlit meadows and forest margins, which supply abundant light. It does best in Full Sun but can withstand Partial Sun, demonstrating adaptability to different light levels.
Water
Colombian thorny bamboo originates from the tropical rainforests of South America and requires high humidity and good moisture retention to thrive. It benefits from regular watering twice a week and is ideally suited for outdoor cultivation in regions with plenty of rainfall to support its growth cycles.
Temperature
Colombian thorny bamboo comes from tropical areas with generally warm, humid climates. Consequently, it is adapted to high heat and moisture. It does not tolerate sudden temperature changes and prefers a consistent thermal environment, so avoiding indoor temperature fluctuations is important. It generally cannot withstand cold and needs warmer conditions to grow. If the ambient temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.
Fertilizer
Colombian thorny bamboo needs extra nutrients to encourage healthy new growth. In spring, spreading compost around the base of the plant will effectively supply the nutrition it requires. Fertilizing helps support vigorous growth and improves the plant’s resistance to diseases and pests.
