Gossypium sturtianum, or Sturt's desert rose, is a woody shrub, closely related to cultivated cotton, found in most mainland states of Australia and the Northern Territory. It is also known as the Darling River rose, cotton rosebush and Australian cotton. The plant has a life span of about 10 years, growing from 1–2 m tall and 1–2 m wide. The flowers are up to 12 cm in diameter: they can be seen for most of the year but peak in late winter. The colour of the petals ranges from pale pink to dark purple to maroon. The five petals are arranged in a whorl and have a dark red centre. The leaves are different shades of green, round and strongly scented when crushed.
Sturt's desert rose has good resistance to disease and is generally not prone to it. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Sturt's desert rose is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much experience in plant care.
How to keep Gossypium Sturtianum.
Light
Sturt's desert rose comes from open habitats, like sunny meadows and forest margins, that provide abundant light. It thrives in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adjusting well to different sunlight conditions.
Water
The Sturt's desert rose is originally from arid regions and thrives with minimal moisture. It requires moderate watering, about twice a week, and prefers well-draining soil. This drought-tolerant plant is perfect for xeriscaping, making it ideal for harsh climates and extended dry spells.
Temperature
Sturt's desert rose has good temperature adaptability and can endure higher heat and wider temperature fluctuations. In hot weather, attention should be paid to watering and providing proper shade to avoid sunburn. Conversely, it has relatively poor cold tolerance; it can handle some chill, but very low temperatures may cause frost damage.
Fertilizer
The timing of fertilization is important for Sturt's desert rose. Apply fertilizer beginning in early spring and continue monthly up to early summer. Fertilizer encourages attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant periods and active growth.
Pruning
Sturt's desert rose showcases vibrant purple flowers. To promote growth and increase blooms, prune it in early spring. Start by removing any damaged branches and thinning out overcrowded stems to improve airflow. Remember to clean your tools to prevent disease, and make your cuts just above healthy buds or stems for the best recovery.
