ON THIS PLANT

Galium pilosum, the hairy bedstraw, is a species of plants in the Rubiaceae. It is native to the southern and eastern United States and Canada from Texas to Florida north to Kansas, Michigan, Ontario, Quebec and New Hampshire. There are also isolated populations in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Hispaniola. The plant is classified as a noxious weed in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

A note from PlantMom

Hairy bedstraw has strong resistance to disease and is generally unlikely to suffer from illnesses. Still, it can be vulnerable to pests and diseases present in its environment. Such infections are typically mild. Regarding care, this plant demands a moderate level of attention. It should be pruned regularly to preserve a tidy appearance and promote healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also encourage blooming. Hairy bedstraw is appropriate for anyone with outdoor areas like a garden or patio and does not call for extensive gardening experience. It may need greater care when cultivated indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Galium Pilosum.

Light

Hairy bedstraw is native to habitats such as forest understories or rocky areas, where it occurs in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adjust to full sun or full shade, reflecting its hardy and versatile nature.

Water

Hairy bedstraw thrives with regular moisture and prefers consistent hydration without excessive humidity. To replicate its natural environment, water the plant weekly. It is typically found in temperate regions, where its growth aligns with seasonal rainfall patterns that are essential for its annual life cycle.

Temperature

Hairy bedstraw can adjust to a broad range of temperature conditions, but its distribution may still be restricted by different combinations of water and heat. It grows best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as prolonged high temperatures, can raise the likelihood of Hairy bedstraw dying. In winter, adequate protection from the cold can increase the plant's survival rate.

Fertilizer

Usually a single fertilizer application in spring is enough for Hairy bedstraw, though multiple feedings can enhance growth. Apply fertilizer every month to every month and a half. Fertilization improves the leaves' appearance and function, maintaining uniform color and a healthy texture. It also promotes root development and nutrient uptake, supporting the plant's long-term health.

Pruning

To improve the health and ornamental appeal of hairy bedstraw, it's best to prune it lightly from early to late spring. This removes dead stems and encourages healthy blooms. By trimming the elongated stems, you can maintain a compact shape, prevent the plant from spreading, and improve air circulation, all of which contribute to better growth.
