A note from PlantMom

Euphorbia retusa has moderate disease resistance and is more vulnerable to humid conditions. It tends to contract diseases in high-humidity environments and is liable to develop root rot during its dormant phase. Regarding care, Euphorbia retusa tolerates drought but requires increased watering throughout the active growing season. Watering should be sharply reduced or stopped entirely during dormancy. Euphorbia retusa is best suited to growers with some experience, as it can be challenging to maintain, especially during the dormant period. It is particularly appropriate for those who can dedicate time to its care over the winter months.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Euphorbia Retusa.

Light

Euphorbia retusa, native to dry regions, grows best in full sun; its natural habitat has intense sunlight and very little shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, which provides some flexibility in its growth.

Water

Euphorbia retusa needs regular watering, about once a week, particularly during its growth periods. Make sure to water the plant when the top 2 inches of the soil feel dry. During hot weather, increase the frequency of watering. For indoor plants, maintain some moisture even during rest periods by adding water from below to avoid overwatering.

Temperature

Although Euphorbia retusa can tolerate some heat, it mainly does best and grows during the cooler months, going dormant in summer. In hot summer conditions, it should be shaded to prevent scorching from strong sunlight. Watering ought to be cut back or stopped during the hottest period to avoid root rot. Euphorbia retusa shows vigorous growth in winter and spring, and so long as temperatures do not fall too low, it will continue to grow steadily.

Fertilizer

Euphorbia retusa requires only light fertilizer applications once or twice a year during the growing season. Do not fertilize in winter or in summer when the plant is dormant. Reduce the amount of fertilizer for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying fertilizer. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and encourages flowering.
