Euphorbia poissonii, also known as Euphorbia poissoni and, incorrectly, as Euphorbia poisoni, is a highly irritant and toxic succulent member of the large and varied spurge family of plants. It is native to northern Nigeria, where local farmers extract its latex for use as a pesticide. Its powerfully irritant and pain-producing nature mandates use as a fencing plant. It is known to the Berom people of the Jos area as pyùlúp who transplant it to their compounds where it is regarded as protection against witchcraft.
Euphorbia poissonii has moderate disease resistance but is more sensitive to humidity and overwatering. It is also more prone to illness if it receives insufficient light and is overwatered. Regarding care, Euphorbia poissonii is drought-tolerant and can withstand extended periods without watering. It requires little fertilizer and only needs occasional pruning. Because of this, it is suitable for people of all experience levels, particularly those who prefer to spend less time on plant care and who may sometimes be away from home for long stretches. It’s a good option for anyone who does not want to invest a lot of time in maintenance but still wants an easy-to-care-for plant.
How to keep Euphorbia Poissonii.
Light
Euphorbia poissonii, native to dry regions, grows best in full sun; its natural habitat has intense sunlight and very little shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, providing some flexibility in its cultivation.
Water
Euphorbia poissonii is a highly drought-tolerant plant that thrives in arid conditions. When cultivating this plant, it's best to water it every three weeks, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Its succulent characteristics enable it to store water efficiently, making it an excellent choice for xeric landscapes with infrequent rainfall.
Temperature
Euphorbia poissonii does best in warm conditions and needs relatively high temperatures during the growing season to encourage growth and metabolic activity. It prefers abundant sunlight, suitable moisture, and good air circulation. However, it can be harmed by very low temperatures and by overwatering. It is important to maintain balance and to avoid both excessively high temperatures and overly dry conditions.
Fertilizer
For Euphorbia poissonii, light doses of fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season are sufficient. Avoid fertilizing in winter and in summer when the plant is dormant. Reduce fertilizer for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before fertilizing. Fertilizing supports healthy growth and encourages blooms.
