ON THIS PLANT

Euphorbia piscidermis is a species of plant native to the succulent scrublands of Ethiopa.

A note from PlantMom

Euphorbia piscidermis has moderate disease resistance and is more sensitive to humidity. It becomes susceptible to illnesses when humidity levels are high and is likely to suffer root rot while dormant. Regarding care, Euphorbia piscidermis tolerates drought but requires increased watering during the active growing season. Watering should be greatly reduced or halted entirely during dormancy. Euphorbia piscidermis is best for growers with some experience, as it can be challenging to maintain, especially in the dormant period. It is particularly appropriate for those who can dedicate time to its care during the winter months.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Euphorbia Piscidermis.

Light

Euphorbia piscidermis comes from habitats with dappled light, such as the understory of forests or rocky areas that provide natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can also tolerate full sun.

Temperature

Although Euphorbia piscidermis can tolerate some heat, it predominantly does best in cooler months and goes dormant during summer. In very hot summer conditions, provide shade to avoid scorching from intense sun. Reduce or suspend watering during the hottest period to prevent root rot. The plant shows vigorous growth in winter and spring, and so long as temperatures do not fall too low it will continue to grow steadily.

Fertilizer

Light applications of fertilizer once or twice a year during the active growing season are enough for Euphorbia piscidermis. Do not fertilize in winter or in summer when the plant is dormant. Cut back on fertilization for recently repotted plants, and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying fertilizer. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and encourages blooms.

Pot & Repot

Repot Euphorbia piscidermis in the warmer months, selecting a pot only slightly larger than the current one with adequate drainage. Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Handle the roots and caudex gently while repotting. After repotting, wait roughly a week before watering to reduce the risk of root rot. Place the plant in a sunny location for best growth.
