ON THIS PLANT

Euphorbia oblongata is a species of spurge known by the common names Balkan spurge, eggleaf spurge and oblong spurge. It is native to Eurasia but can be found elsewhere as a weedy introduced species. This is a hairy perennial herb growing to maximum heights of just over half a metre. It has oval-shaped or narrow leaves with finely toothed edges which are 4 to 6 centimetres long. The foliage is green to yellow-green. The inflorescences hold tiny glandular flowers. The fruit is a spherical capsule about half a centimetre long which contains smooth brown seeds.

A note from PlantMom

Eggleaf Spurge has strong resistance to disease and is generally not vulnerable to illnesses. That said, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its environment. Such infections are typically mild. Regarding care, this plant needs moderate upkeep. It should be pruned regularly to preserve its appearance and support healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also encourage flowering. Eggleaf Spurge is well suited for anyone with outdoor space, like a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive plant-care experience. It may need extra attention when kept indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Euphorbia Oblongata.

Light

Eggleaf Spurge needs plenty of sunlight to grow vigorously. It performs best in sunny locations but can tolerate reduced light to a limited degree. Both too little and too much light can hinder its growth: insufficient light may cause weakness, while excessive light can scorch the leaves.

Water

Eggleaf spurge is well-suited for dry environments, as it is drought-tolerant and thrives in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Watering it once a week is typically sufficient, and seasonal rains help to improve its resilience and water-use efficiency. This makes it an excellent choice for xeriscaping.

Temperature

Eggleaf Spurge is native to temperate regions and does best at temperatures between 68 and 95 °F (20 to 35 ℃). Growing it in cooler climates may require providing some form of warmth.

Fertilizer

Eggleaf Spurge does well with regular, light applications of fertilizer to encourage healthy leaf growth. Fertilize it about once a month throughout the summer. Nitrogen is important for the foliage, and providing nitrogen-rich fertilizer helps Eggleaf Spurge prosper.

Pruning

Eggleaf Spurge showcases vibrant green leaves and yellow-green flowers. Pruning from early to late spring encourages healthy growth and improves air circulation. It also helps control the plant's shape and spread, as well as preventing it from becoming leggy. Be sure to use clean, sharp tools to promote strong development and extend the blooming period throughout the growing season.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Eggleaf Spurge, choose a pot that is 1-2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger in diameter and has good drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix and consider adding perlite for extra drainage. Repot in spring or early summer, water thoroughly afterward, and place it in a shady location at first.
