ON THIS PLANT

Eugenia pyriformis is a plant of the family Myrtaceae found primarily in Brazil. It reaches 20 to 45 feet (6 to 13 meters) in height and 1 to 1.5 feet (30-50 centimeters) in trunk diameter. It is a native species of Brazil, occurring primarily in the states of Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo.

A note from PlantMom

Uvaia is resistant to diseases and is generally not vulnerable to them. In terms of care, the plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Uvaiat is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much gardening experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Eugenia Pyriformis.

Light

Uvaia comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which provide abundant light. It flourishes in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to various sunlight conditions.

Temperature

Uvaia comes from tropical areas, where the climate is usually warm and humid. As a result, it is adapted to high heat and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature shifts and prefers a steady thermal environment, so avoiding temperature fluctuations indoors is important. It typically cannot endure cold conditions and needs warmer temperatures to grow. If the ambient temperature becomes too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

Use organic fertilizers (e.g., fish emulsion, compost) instead of chemical ones for Uvaia. Give young plants increased nitrogen and phosphorus in spring. Work compost or fertilizer into the soil before or after planting. For mature plants, apply a balanced fertilizer in spring or one aimed at specific nutrient deficiencies. Nutrient shortages cause small leaves, short/stunted branches, yellow or bronze foliage, acidic/sour fruits, premature fruit drop, and fruit splitting.
