Echinocereus × roetteri, also known as Roetter's hedgehog cactus, is a hybrid plant resulting from a cross between Echinocereus pentalophus and Echinocereus rigidissimus. It is commonly found in the southwestern United States, particularly in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
This cactus typically grows to a height of about 6-8 inches, with a diameter of 4-6 inches. Its cylindrical stems are covered in spines that range from yellow to reddish-brown. The flowers of Roetter's hedgehog cactus are usually pink or magenta with white centers, blooming from late spring to early summer.
Echinocereus × roetteri prefers well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight but can also tolerate partial shade. It is drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly during the winter months when it goes dormant.
This cactus makes an excellent addition to rock gardens or xeriscaping projects due to its unique appearance and low maintenance requirements. However, it is important to note that this species may not survive freezing temperatures below 20°F (-7°C).
