ON THIS PLANT

Dischidia platyphylla is a species of plant in the genus Dischidia native to the Philippines. Its name (platyphylla) refers to the flattened leaves, which as it climbs may cling in a shingle-like way to trees, similar to related species like Dischidia imbricata. These leaves are a form of domatia, which act as a shelter for ants in an example of mutualism with ants that is found in several species of Dischidia.

A note from PlantMom

Dischidia platyphylla exhibits a fairly high level of disease resistance and is typically not prone to illnesses. Still, if grown in a poor environment it can become more vulnerable to disease. It also faces few insect pests. Regarding care, its needs are moderate. Providing ample sunlight is important, since inadequate light can make it more disease-prone and cause spindly growth. Because it is frequently kept indoors, it may need to be relocated to a bright spot on a regular basis. It does not need frequent watering. In general, Dischidia platyphylla is appropriate for most people, though it performs best with those who can offer strong light conditions.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Dischidia Platyphylla.

Light

Dischidia platyphylla naturally occurs in habitats such as forest understories or rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It favors partial sun but can adjust to full sun or full shade, reflecting its versatile and hardy nature.

Temperature

Dischidia platyphylla comes from tropical areas, where the climate is typically warm and humid. As a result, it is adapted to high temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature changes and prefers a stable temperature environment, so it is important to avoid temperature fluctuations indoors. It generally cannot withstand cold temperatures and needs warmer conditions to grow. If the surrounding temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Dischidia platyphylla, pick a pot 1–2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with good drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball sits slightly below the rim of the pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
