ON THIS PLANT

Millettia pinnata is a species of tree in the pea family, Fabaceae, native to eastern and tropical Asia, Australia, and Pacific islands. It is often known by the synonym Pongamia pinnata. Its common names include Indian beech and Pongame oiltree.

A note from PlantMom

Pongame Oiltree is resistant to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of care, the plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Pongame Oiltreet is well suited for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much prior plant-care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Derris Indica.

Light

The Pongame Oiltree prospers when it receives plenty of sunlight for most of the day. Nonetheless, it can also tolerate and thrive in moderate sunlight. Its growth is, however, inhibited by excessive shade, and overly intense sunlight may induce leaf scorch. The tree's natural environment is conducive to this affinity for sunlight.

Temperature

The Pongame Oiltree is native to regions with temperatures ranging from 68 to 100.4 °F (20 to 38 ℃). It flourishes in hot environments and requires exposure to sunlight for ideal growth. In colder times, make sure the ambient temperature does not dip below 68 °F (20 ℃).
