ON THIS PLANT

Dendrobium moschatum Griff. is a synonym of Dendrobium pulchellum.

Dendrobium moschatum, the musky-smelling dendrobium, is a species of orchid. It is native to the Himalayas (northern and eastern India, northern Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Assam, Yunnan), and Indochina (Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia).Plicatol B is a phenanthrene that can be isolated from Dendrobium moschatum.

A note from PlantMom

Musky smelling dendrobium typically has strong resistance to disease and relatively few insect pests. Its care is considered difficult because it needs high humidity while also having good ventilation and minimal harmful pathogens. Too much watering can cause root rot. Anyone can grow Musky smelling dendrobium, but keeping it healthy and getting it to bloom again requires more growing experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Dendrobium Moschatum.

Light

Musky smelling dendrobium is native to habitats such as forest understories or rocky areas, where it experiences natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, showing its adaptable and hardy nature.

Temperature

The musky-smelling dendrobium does best in warm conditions. It prefers moderately high temperatures but not extreme heat and humidity. Sunlight warms the plant and encourages flowering. However, extended direct sun in summer can cause sunburn, so the amount of light it gets should be managed during that season. The plant generally does not tolerate cold well, so it needs sufficient protection and warmer conditions in winter to avoid freezing.

Fertilizer

Proper fertilization is essential for the health and appearance of the Musky-smelling Dendrobium. Fertilize the Musky-smelling Dendrobium during summer, applying fertilizer monthly throughout the season. Nutrients drive growth and help maintain the plant's structures. Fertilization improves the Musky-smelling Dendrobium's floral display, ensuring the best blooms.

Pot & Repot

When repotting a musky-smelling Dendrobium, pick a slightly larger pot with good drainage, preferably a clear orchid pot. Use a well-draining, orchid-specific mix that includes bark or moss. Carefully clean the roots and trim any that are dead or rotting. Repot after flowering, usually in spring or fall, water thoroughly, and place in bright, indirect light. Once repotted, avoid disturbing the roots.
