ON THIS PLANT

Cornus obliqua, the blue-fruited dogwood, silky dogwood, or pale dogwood, is a flowering shrub of eastern North America in the dogwood family, Cornaceae. It is sometimes considered a subspecies of Cornus amomum, which is also known as silky dogwood. It was first described in 1820 by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque. It is in the subgenus Kraniopsis.

A note from PlantMom

Cornus amomum subsp. obliqua is disease-resistant and is generally unlikely to suffer from illnesses. As for care, this plant is fairly low maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have bloomed. Cornus amomum subsp. obliquat is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Cornus Obliqua.

Light

Cornus amomum subsp. obliqua is native to habitats such as forest understories and rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adapt to full sun or full shade, demonstrating its versatile and hardy nature.

Temperature

Cornus amomum subsp. obliqua is highly adaptable to a variety of climates, whether in very hot summers or cold winters. Nonetheless, it has a preferred temperature range for healthy growth. If temperatures rise too far, the plant can experience heat and humidity stress that may kill it. In areas where temperatures near the lower limit of its cold tolerance, providing insulation is important to protect the plant.

Fertilizer

Timing is important when fertilizing Cornus amomum subsp. obliqua. Apply fertilizer in early spring and then every month through early summer. Fertilizer encourages attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth periods.
