ON THIS PLANT

Conophytum truncatum is a small South African species of succulent plant of the genus Conophytum.

A note from PlantMom

Dumpling has moderate disease resistance and is more sensitive to humidity. It becomes vulnerable to disease when humidity is high and is prone to root rot during its dormant period. In terms of care, Dumpling tolerates drought but requires more water during the growing season. Watering should be greatly reduced or stopped entirely during dormancy. Dumpling is appropriate for people with some growing experience, but it can be difficult to care for, particularly during the dormant period. It is especially suitable for those who have time to devote to its care during the winter months.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Conophytum Truncatum.

Light

Native to dry areas, Dumpling does best in full sun; its native habitat is marked by intense sunlight and very little shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, which gives it some flexibility in its growth.

Temperature

Although Dumpling can tolerate some heat, it mainly does best and grows during cooler periods and becomes dormant in summer. In hot summer weather, it should be given shade to avoid leaf scorching from strong sun. Watering ought to be reduced or stopped in the hottest months to avoid root rot. Dumpling puts on its most vigorous growth in winter and spring. Provided the temperature does not fall too far, it will continue to grow steadily.

Fertilizer

For Dumpling, light applications of fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season are enough. Avoid fertilizing in winter and summer when it is dormant. Cut back on fertilizer for plants that have been repotted and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying any. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and promotes blooms.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Dumpling, choose a pot slightly larger than the current one that provides good drainage. Use a gritty, well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Gently remove the plant from its old pot, brush away excess soil, and replant it at the same depth. Wait a few days before watering to allow any root damage to recover. Repot in spring or fall and place it in a brightly lit spot.
