ON THIS PLANT

Chrysophyllum mexicanum is a plant in the family Sapotaceae, native to Mexico and Central America.

A note from PlantMom

Caimitillo is quite resistant to disease and is typically not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of care, the plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Caimitillo is well suited for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much experience in plant care.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Chrysophyllum Mexicanum.

Light

Caimitillo comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which provide abundant light. It does best in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to a range of sunlight conditions.

Temperature

Caimitillo comes from tropical areas, where the climate is generally warm and humid. Consequently, it is well adapted to high heat and moisture. It does not tolerate sudden temperature shifts and prefers a steady thermal environment, so avoiding indoor temperature fluctuations is important. It typically cannot endure cold and needs warmer conditions to grow; if the surrounding temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

Use organic fertilizers (e.g., fish emulsion, compost) instead of chemical fertilizers for Caimitillo. Give young plants higher amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus in spring. Incorporate compost or fertilizer into the soil before or after planting. For mature plants, supplement in spring with a balanced fertilizer or one targeted to specific deficiencies. Nutrient deficiency causes small leaves, short branches, yellow or bronze leaves, acidic fruits, premature fruit drop, and splitting.
