ON THIS PLANT

Chamaedorea costaricana is a species of palm in the genus Chamaedorea, found in Central America. A common local name in Costa Rica is pacaya, though this is also used as a name for Chamaedorea tepejilote.

A note from PlantMom

Pacaya is resistant to diseases and is usually not susceptible to them. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Pacayat is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or a deck, and does not demand extensive care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Chamaedorea Costaricana.

Light

Pacaya occurs naturally in habitats like forest understories or rocky sites, where it is subject to natural shade. It favors partial sun but can tolerate both full sun and full shade, demonstrating its hardy and adaptable nature.

Humidity

This plant will thrive in moderate humidity, which is probably the level in your home. However, misting it a few times a week can be very beneficial. Make sure the room has good ventilation.

Temperature

Pacaya comes from tropical areas, where the weather is usually warm and humid. Therefore it is well suited to high temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature shifts and prefers a steady thermal environment, so avoiding temperature variations indoors is important. It generally cannot endure cold conditions and needs warmer temperatures to grow. If the surrounding temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

To encourage healthy growth, fertilize your Pacaya in early spring. Regular feeding improves overall health, producing vigorous growth, greater resilience in harsh conditions, and enhanced resistance to pests and diseases. Follow a consistent fertilization schedule for your Pacaya to keep its foliage vibrant with rich color and a lush appearance.
