ON THIS PLANT

Bromus rigidus, the ripgut brome, is a grass native to Eurasia and naturalized in North America. The specific epithet rigidus means rigid or stiff.

A note from PlantMom

Red brome is fairly disease-resistant and is usually not susceptible to diseases. With regard to care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Red bromet is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not need extensive care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Bromus Rigidus.

Light

Red brome comes from bright, open habitats and grows best in full sunlight. It can tolerate some shade but favors direct sun for optimal growth. This plant, which may be annual or biennial, is noted for its sun-loving habits.

Temperature

Red brome can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, though its distribution may still be restricted by different combinations of moisture and heat. It does best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or watering. Long stretches of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as extended high temperatures, can raise the likelihood of Red brome dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can increase the plant's survival.

Pruning

For the best results with red brome, it is important to prune it carefully from early to late spring. By trimming away dead or overcrowded stalks, you will improve air circulation and sunlight exposure, which in turn promotes growth and reduces the risk of disease. Regular maintenance is key to ensuring a healthier and more vigorous plant.
