ON THIS PLANT

Boykinia aconitifolia, also known as Brook saxifrage and Allegheny brookfoam, is a species of vascular plant in the genus Boykinia. It is native to the southeastern region of the United States, ranging from West Virginia to Alabama and Georgia. It grows in wet woodlands, on the edges of ponds and lakes, or in other moist areas, flowering in the summer. It has both basal and cauline leaves, with petioles three to eighteen centimeters long. Leaves are generally reniform, but can be orbiculate to cordate with three to seven lobes. The seeds are black with tubercles.According to the Southern Appalachian Species Viability Project, Boykinia aconitifolia is at high risk due to sedimentation and other pollutants.

A note from PlantMom

Allegheny brookfoam has strong resistance to diseases and is generally not prone to them. Still, it can be vulnerable to pests and diseases present in its environment. These problems are usually mild. For care, this plant requires moderate maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to keep a good appearance and support healthy growth. Fertilizing can also help encourage flowering. Allegheny brookfoam is appropriate for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not need extensive care experience. It may demand more attention if grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Boykinia Aconitifolia.

Light

Allegheny brookfoam comes from habitats like forest understories and rocky locations, where it occurs in natural shade. It prefers partial sun yet can tolerate both full sun and full shade, reflecting its adaptable, hardy nature.

Temperature

Allegheny brookfoam can tolerate a wide range of temperature conditions, but its distribution can still be restricted by different combinations of moisture and heat. It does best in warm summer climates with adequate rainfall or watering. Prolonged periods of cloudy, rainy weather and extended high temperatures can raise the likelihood of Allegheny brookfoam dying. In winter, proper protection from the cold can increase the plant’s survival.

Fertilizer

The ideal time to fertilize an Allegheny brookfoam is in early spring, as it comes out of dormancy and begins active growth. Fertilization supplies key nutrients necessary for healthy growth. Although Allegheny brookfoam has relatively low fertilizer needs, annual fertilization can improve its survival and encourage better, longer-lasting flowers.
