ON THIS PLANT

Bambusa spinosa, also known as B. blumeana, spiny bamboo or thorny bamboo, although in this respect it may be confused with Bambusa bambos, is a species of clumping bamboo occurring in Tropical Asia.

A note from PlantMom

Spiny bamboo is disease-resistant and is typically not vulnerable to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be trimmed after they finish blooming. Spiny bamboo is suitable for anyone with outdoor space—such as a garden or deck—and does not demand much care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Bambusa Spinosa.

Light

Spiny bamboo comes from open settings, like sunlit fields and fringes of forests, where there is plenty of illumination. It prospers in complete sunlight but can also withstand partial sunlight, demonstrating a good adaptability to different light environments.

Water

Spiny bamboo thrives in a tropical climate with consistent moisture, flourishing best in evenly moist soil. Water the plant every 1 to 2 weeks, allowing the topsoil to dry out slightly between waterings. To support optimal growth and health, adjust your watering schedule based on seasonal rainfall, as spiny bamboo shows moderate drought tolerance.

Temperature

Spiny bamboo is indigenous to tropical areas known for their warm and moist climate. This makes it well-suited for environments with high humidity and temperature. It does not fare well with abrupt changes in temperature and flourishes more in stable thermal conditions. Consequently, regulating indoor temperature fluctuations is crucial. The plant generally cannot withstand chilly temperatures and needs warmer conditions for its growth. Should the temperature in its surroundings fall excessively, the plant might stop growing or even perish.

Fertilizer

The care of Spiny bamboo greatly depends on fertilization. Consistent feeding during its growth period aids in maintaining its energy for vibrant leaves and encourages overall development. Failing to properly fertilize may cause poor leaf health, reduced aesthetic value, and hindered or fragile growth that's subject to snapping.

Pruning

Spiny bamboo is a fast-growing plant known for its thorny stems. To keep it under control, it's best to prune the bamboo in early spring. This helps manage its height, remove weak culms, and improve airflow. Thinning the bamboo encourages vigorous growth, reduces the risk of pests, and boosts cane production. Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent the bamboo from becoming invasive.
