ON THIS PLANT

Argyrocytisus battandieri, the pineapple broom or Moroccan broom is a species of flowering plant in the legume family, Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae. It is the only member of the genus Argyrocytisus (formerly Cytisus battandieri).A native of Morocco, it is a substantial deciduous shrub growing to 4 metres (13 ft) tall and wide, with trifoliate grey-green leaves, and erect racemes of yellow flowers with a distinctive pineapple scent. Grown in a sheltered location, it is hardy down to −15 °C (5 °F). The cultivar ‘Yellow Tail’ has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It was introduced to the UK as recently as 1922, and for a long time was thought less hardy than plants have proved.

A note from PlantMom

Pineapple broom is disease-resistant and generally not prone to illnesses. In terms of care, the plant is relatively low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs minimal watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Pineapple broom is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much gardening experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Argyrocytisus Battandieri.

Light

Pineapple broom comes from open habitats like sunny meadows and forest edges where light is plentiful. It prefers Full Sun but will also tolerate Partial Sun, adjusting well to different light conditions.

Water

The pineapple broom plant originates from the mountainous regions of Morocco, where it thrives in moderately dry climates. It needs to be watered weekly but can adapt to periods of infrequent rain. Ideally grown outdoors, the pineapple broom is resilient to changes in water availability and benefits from natural rainfall during its active growing season.

Temperature

Pineapple broom is fairly adaptable to temperature, able to withstand higher heat and substantial temperature swings. In hot weather, attention should be paid to watering and providing proper shade to prevent sunburn. Conversely, Pineapple broom has limited cold tolerance. While it can endure some chill, very cold conditions can cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

Proper timing matters for fertilizing Pineapple broom. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue monthly until early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and provides energy during both dormant and active growth stages.

Pruning

The Pineapple Broom plant is known for its pineapple-scented blooms and attractive foliage. It thrives when pruned in the winter. To keep the plant healthy, remove any dead branches and thin out crowded areas to improve airflow. Make sure to prune just above the buds to encourage new growth, and always use clean tools. Regular pruning not only improves flowering but also boosts the plant's vigor. For more detailed care instructions, refer to horticultural resources.
