ON THIS PLANT

Anemonoides quinquefolia (French: anémone à cinq folioles), a flowering plant in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, is native to North America. It is commonly called wood anemone or windflower, not to be confused with Anemonoides nemorosa, a closely related European species also known by these common names. The specific epithet quinquefolia means "five-leaved", which is a misnomer since each leaf has just three leaflets. A plant typically has a single, small white flower with 5 sepals (but no petals).

A note from PlantMom

Wood anemone is fairly disease-resistant and generally not prone to illness. However, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its surroundings. These infections are usually mild. In terms of care, this plant requires moderate maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to preserve a tidy appearance and healthy growth. Fertilization can also help encourage flowering. Wood anemone is suitable for people with outdoor spaces, such as a garden or patio, and does not require extensive plant-care experience. It may need more attention when grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Anemonoides Quinquefolia.

Light

Wood anemone grows best in conditions where it receives moderate sun for part of the day and can adapt to places with less sunlight. Its health and growth can be harmed by too much sun. It comes from a habitat where sunlight was filtered through a canopy of other vegetation.

Temperature

The wood anemone plant originates from temperate regions and prefers temperatures between 41 and 89.6 ℉ (5 and 32 ℃). During the summer months it benefits from partial shade to prevent overheating. In winter it can tolerate freezing temperatures if the roots are properly insulated with mulch.

Fertilizer

One fertilizer application in spring is generally enough for Wood anemone, but repeated feedings can enhance growth. Feed every four to six weeks. Fertilizing improves the leaves’ appearance and function, helping to maintain even color and a healthy texture. It also promotes root development and nutrient uptake for long-term plant health.
