ON THIS PLANT

Allium cyaneum, dark blue garlic, is a Chinese species of onion. It prefers to grow at elevations from 2,100 to 5,000 m on slopes and meadows, and forest edges. It occurs in Gansu, Hubei, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Sichuan and Xizang (Tibet) provinces of China, and possibly in Korea. Its leaves and scapes are edible and are occasionally consumed by local peoples as a spice after drying. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, and is also considered by them as a good plant to attract pollinators.

A note from PlantMom

Allium cyaneum is fairly disease-resistant and typically does not suffer from many illnesses. However, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its surroundings. Such infections are generally not severe. Care-wise, the plant needs moderate upkeep. Regular pruning is necessary to maintain an attractive appearance and support healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also encourage flowering. Allium cyaneum is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not require extensive care experience. It may need more attention when grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Allium Cyaneum.

Light

Allium cyaneum is a sun-loving, perennial herbaceous plant native to open habitats and commonly occurring in meadows and grasslands. It favors full sun but can tolerate partial sun exposure.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize an Allium cyaneum is in early spring, as it comes out of dormancy and begins active growth. Fertilizing supplies essential nutrients needed for healthy development. While Allium cyaneum does not require heavy feeding, applying fertilizer once a year can improve its chances of survival and encourage fuller, longer-lasting blooms.

Pruning

Allium cyaneum showcases delicate blue flowers and grass-like foliage. To promote new growth and improve air circulation—which enhances the plant's health and appearance—prune it from early to late spring by deadheading spent blooms and removing any damaged leaves.

Pot & Repot

For the optimal health of Allium cyaneum, it's essential to provide excellent drainage when planting them in pots. This prevents waterlogging and promotes healthy roots.
