ON THIS PLANT

Physalis alkekengi, the bladder cherry, Chinese lantern, Japanese-lantern, strawberry groundcherry, or winter cherry, is a species of flowering plant in the nightshade family Solanaceae. It is a close relative of the new world Physalis peruviana (Cape gooseberry). Unlike the rest of Physalis that is native to the Americas, this species is native to the regions covering Southern Europe to South Asia and Northeast Asia.

A note from PlantMom

Strawberry ground cherry is fairly resistant to disease and typically does not suffer from many illnesses. Still, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its environment. When infections do occur, they are generally mild. Care requirements are moderate. The plant should be pruned on a regular basis to preserve a tidy appearance and support healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also encourage more flowering. Strawberry ground cherry is appropriate for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive gardening experience. It may need extra attention if cultivated indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Alkekengi Officinarum.

Light

Strawberry ground cherry is a sun-loving perennial herbaceous plant native to open habitats, commonly found in meadows and grasslands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Water

Strawberry ground cherries thrive with moderate moisture and need to be watered weekly to avoid overwatering. They adapt well to indoor humidity and can tolerate short periods of dryness. For optimal growth, especially during their active growing phase, the soil should be kept evenly moist.

Temperature

Strawberry ground cherry can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, although its distribution may still be restricted by particular combinations of moisture and heat. It does best in warm summer conditions when there is sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as prolonged high temperatures, can raise the chance of the Strawberry ground cherry dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can boost the plant’s survival rate.

Fertilizer

The Strawberry ground cherry plant needs adequate nutrients to achieve optimal fruit production. Apply fertilizer in early spring to promote new growth and flower development. Regular feeding keeps the plant healthy, produces more delicious fruit, and prevents nutrient deficiency problems like yellow leaves and poor fruit production.

Pruning

The strawberry ground cherry, known for its lantern-like calyx, thrives when pruned annually between early and late spring. For optimal growth, remove dead branches and thin out dense areas to improve air circulation. Be careful to avoid heavy cuts to preserve its delicate structure. This approach encourages flowering, fruiting, and overall robustness.

Pot & Repot

The strawberry ground cherry benefits from being repotted every 2-3 years, ideally in early spring. To do this, select a container that is one size larger than the current one, and use well-draining soil. Ensure that you water the plant consistently. After repotting, regular pruning is important to maintain the plant's shape and health. This will also enhance the display of its lantern-like fruits.
